Why does the Leaf charge so fast?

The Leaf takes 4-8 hours to charge on 220 Volt charging units, but only 26 minutes to charge to 80% at quick charge stations. The speed of recharging will play a significant role in the success of the Leaf, so Nissan has partnered with Showa Shell to help develop the technology for solar quick charge stations. The ability to quickly charge the vehicle helps to reduce people’s anxiety when driving the car away from home. Since the power being delivered by quick charge stations does not need to be compatible with household electric devices (like the home charge station) more power can be delivered in a shorter period of time.
