Why does joint cartilage disappear as you get older?

Cartilage naturally breaks down over time, and also degrades in joints because of the mechanical wear and tear that occurs every time the joint is used, injury (especially to joints like the knee), possible biochemical effects, and genetic factors that may predispose someone to osteoarthritis.
