why does it take so much fresh water to process livestock?

A big chunk of it is the huge amount of food that has to be grown to feed them, especially larger animals like cattle.

Additionally, a ton of water is used in the transportation, packaging and preparation of meat. Given the conditions that commercial livestock live in creates a lot of waste in very close quarters and therefore these conditions are very unsanitary. Water is used to clean the animals as well as the processing plant. Also the packages that store the meat require water for their manufacturing especially if they are petroleum based. Then there is the fuel that is needed to transport the meat which is also petroleum based and will have require refining which uses water.
