Why does it take Orange Roughy fish so long to reproduce?

Because the lifespan of an orange roughy is so long (they can live up to 150 years), they evolved to have a longer reprodutive cycle. It is comparable to humans, who take longer than most animals to reach sexual maturity. And, even when sexually mature, most human couples only have 2-3 offspring. Think of it as nature’s way of combating over population because we live for so long.

Slow growth, longevity, and low production are characteristic of many organisms in the deep sea. This is because these organisms have adapted to have very slow metabolisms due to the cold ambient temperature, as well as the low concentration of food.
