There are several factors that can cause a specific smell after rain. One is the activation of certain bacteria by the water. The common bacteria called acitomycetes is responsible for the earthy smell after rain kicks spores up into the air. Rain acidity can also interact with organics to produce a smell. Rain can also react with plant oils that have pooled, also causing a smell associated with after-rain freshness.
