Why does it seem that islands get hit the hardest with tsunami’s?

Low-lying areas are most vulnerable to tsunamis. Islands are closest to the water. Once the giant waves come in, they naturally get hit the hardest. Small islands also tend to have very few or small establishments. This is why tsunamis tend to wipe everything out once they strike.
