I don’t agree with the notion that cars got better MPG in the past. It may SEEM like that, however, for a number of reasons. Gas prices have drastically gone up in recent years so the cost of filling up a car has gone up drastically. That may have a perceived affect on MPG. Also, there has been over the last 10 years much more importance placed on MPGs, which hasn’t been there in the past. Climate change is much more serious now than in past years because consumption is way up both with consumers and industrially. It is an effect that makes it seem like cars are in dire shape, where it has actually been a gradual increase over time.
