CA has a Mediterranean climate, hot dry summers and wet mild winters. CA is the most populous state in the US with high population density and has the 4th largest forest acreage. The states with more forest acreage are Alaska, Oregon, and Georgia. These three things, climate, available “burnable” material and population, make California the perfect place for large forest fires.
Of the things listed above, population is the the major contributor. With such a high concentration of people, seasonal fires are suppressed to avoid burning down homes. This results in large amounts of undergrowth, which act as kindling causing larger fires.
