Why does hydrogen peroxide do such a good job of cleaning cuts?

Hydrogen Peroxide is a very good oxidizing agent which is why it is such a good antimicrobial. It also slows the oozing of blood from small blood vessels.

It is not, however, often used in first aid anymore because the oxidizing process damages healthy cells too which is why it stings. A better bet is just running clean water to get the debris out of the cut, using over the counter antibiotic gel or cream and applying a bandage.
