Why does glass crack when it is heated and suddenly cooled?

When glass is exposed to heat, an uneven increase in expansion occurs in the thermal expansion of the walls of the object. If the expansion is uneven enough, the strength of the object will be put into jeopardy, and the glass will break (Newton and Ask a Scientist Educational Programs, 2011).
