Why does a free market never really succeed?

Money. Money for as useful a commodity, it has destroyed our sociological values as a people and has at this juncture in human development, greatly restricted technological breakthroughs that could make life so much easier and possible for the rest of us. This is just my personal opinion, but if progress wasnt so constricted by the need for money, so much more would be possible today rather than twenty or a hundred years from now.
