Why does dirt turn dark when it gets wet?

In general, wet things look darker because water fills up any space between particles. This water acts just like a fiber optic cable, carrying the light through the object instead of reflecting it back to your eye. Since more of the light goes through the dirt, less of the light is reflected back and the wet spot looks darker.
