Diesel engines are actually more fuel efficient than regular gas engines, but they are disadvantaged in other respects. For instance, they tend to be noisy and their emissions were much dirtier than that of standard gas engines. However, steps are being taken to mitigate these problems. Not only are improvements to the engine design making them quieter now, but cleaner fuel has been created as well to improve emission quality.
I don’t know if diesel actually burns cleaner than gas, but Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) fuel is a much cleaner kind of diesel fuel compared to standard diesel fuel. According to one site, this puts diesel engines on par with standard gas engines in terms of emission quality. This, combined with the better fuel efficiency of diesel engines, is probably why people might begin to consider diesel the superior option.
