Why does cork in a bat make the ball go further?

It is a misconception that using a corked bat enables a player to hit the baseball further. A corked bat will actually decrease the driven distance of a baseball compared to an uncorked bat. A corked bat should allow a hitter to get more hits because the bat would then weigh less and it would allow the bat to be swung faster.
