Why does deforestation contribute to the greenhouse effect?

Forests are considered carbon sinks.  Trees carryout photosynthesis and this helps to convert CO2 to O2.  There is also a substantial amount of CO2 and methane in the soil that is released during deforestation.  Also, the machines used for deforestation contribute greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
