Competition occurs between different species because there are a limited amount of resources that the animals need to survive, and they happen to be the same resources that the other animal needs to survive as well. For example two animals that are in competition are lions and hyenas. They compete both for land and food. Their diets are very similar and they both require land for habitat, resting, and raising young which is limited. They are both competing for the same food sources and habitat.
Instinct tells animals to be responsible for one thing above all else, and that’s to survive. Animals are competing for food, water, and shelter among other things–to not compete would result in extinction, coining Darwin’s phrase “survival of the fittest.”
