Why does combustion create so much energy?

Combustion creates so much energy because of the change of state of the substance being combusted. Intermolecular forces are broken and energy is released because of low-to-high entropy change of state. Basically, combustion makes an otherwise stable state of a substance unstable through broken bonds.
