Why does a citizen of the USA have thirty times the impact on the environment than someone in India?

The United States is all about consumerism. Think about what Americans have that the overwhelming majority of Indians do not – cars (big, fuel-guzzling ones), large homes that are always being heated/cooled, fast/processed food, and the “luxury” of being wasteful with our possessions, to name a few. The daily amount of energy used by an individual American is incredible. The problem is that most are also don’t understand just how badly their actions are harming the planet.
