Coal provides China with 69 percent of its primary energy and 80 percent of its electricity. China has become dependent on coal as means to produce energy because it is cheaper than the use of oil, natural gas, or hydroelectric power. Coal is used to generate power for factories and electric plants, to heat homes, and to cook food. Coal is used at a rate of 1.5 tons per person per year in China; the country burns through it so fast that Chinese ships sit and wait for weeks at ports in Australia for more shipments.
