Why does deforestation cause erosion?

Deforestation causes erosion because tree and plant roots are what help keep soil in its place. When all the vegetation is cleared the soil simply washes away with the rain, leaving only the harder generally infertile clays and rocks behind. This is particularly true of the rain forest areas where the top soil layer is very thin.
