Deteriorating cartilage is caused either from lack of nutrition in your diet, disease, or your usual wear and tear. Essentially the breakdown of cartilage in your body, noticeably in the joints, is called arthritis.

Cartilage absorbs the shock and relieves the pressure of every step in every day, naturally our cartilage breaks down–even our bones tend to thin over time. However, scientists are looking into inhibitory proteins that can potentially slow down or reverse this process. What was found was that if you can interrupt the interraction between two proteins that cause inflammation and pain between joints, you can slow down the effects of arthritis.
