Why does cartilage break down or wear out in knees?

Events like overuse and injuries stimulates the cells of the cartilage to start making enzymes that actually break it down. Since this irritates the joints even more that just produces more enzymes that gradually erode the cartilage in an area.  Basically cartilage breaks down in areas where it is stressed which is usually the knees since we stand so much, run, etc.

Cartilage can degenerate with age because as we get older, the water content of cartilage rises while the protein component degenerates. Eventually, this causes the cartilage to degenerate, which can be encouraged by overuse. Glucosamine sulfate has been shown to alleviate some of the pain that accompanies cartilage degeneration in the joints.
