Why does a car’s battery die if you leave headlights on overnight, but not when you have them on for a few hours every night for months?

Because every time you drive your car, your battery is recharged. Whenever your engine is running, it powers the alternator, which charges your battery. A car battery will hold a charge for a time, allowing you to use your lights or accessories for a little bit without starting your car or completely draining the battery. Leaving the lights on too long drains the battery, and you need some juice even to start the car back up!
