Why does Brazil keep building new roads in the Amazon rainforest?

Despite protest, the Amazon is still being deforested at an alarming rate. Trees are being removed not just for logging, but also to make land for cattle ranching and farming. Many of the roads being built now connect these islands of civilization in the forest. Farms and ranches are connected through these roads and goods are shipped along tyhem to sustain the growing agriculture of the region.
