Why does bamboo grow so fast?

There are a number of species of bamboo, so not all bamboo plants grow at the same rate, but in ideal conditions, and generally speaking, most bamboo plants will rocket to crazy heights after the three or so years it takes for the plant to establish itself.  It’s a member of the grass family, and basically, the plant uses its own existing energy to multiply and “colonize” the surrounding area.  Think of an enormous, woody version of lawn grass!
