Severe water shortages are in a large part due to population increases. These increases affect the water supplies in a greater way than just the water these added people need to drink, an increase in population means an increase in crops, in home development and industry which all make drinkable water unavailable in their own ways.
Australia is facing a severe water shortage because in the last decade, they have seen a 21 percent decrease in rainfall and a 65 decline in water storage in the dams. There is also a growing population of 3 percent a year when the population already consists of 1.7 million, and they have not found other alternative places for water yet.
