Why does America have such a hard time bringing fuel efficient diesel cars to buyers?

It took a long time for Americans to give up their giant SUVs and trucks.  In the suburbs, most people do not need to have such large gas guzzlers to get to and from work, and rarely use these vehicles for towing or moving large items.  I think it took longer in America to adopt more fuel efficient cars, and it is likely the same for diesel cars and hybrids.

The Volkswagen Jetta does have a nice, and pretty fuel efficient diesel model that has been available for years, so if people want it, it is out there to buy.
