Why do your toes and fingers get cold first?

Fingers, toes and other extremities get colder faster than other parts of the body due to their high surface to mass ratio and their relative distance from the core of the cardiovascular system which circulates blood throughout the body.  These areas are often more exposed than other body parts, and this is a factor in their rate of temperature loss.
