Aside from the huge population of hipsters in NYC, pushing the “coolness” of bikes, once people get comfortable and confident on a bike in traffic, their legs get into shape, and they begin to get faster, in a dense urban area with lots of congestion like NYC, they can actually move about the city much more efficiently than on a bus, in a car, or even on the subway. Add that to benefits such as getting in shape, saving money on gas or public transportation passes, and helping reduce carbon emissions, and the incentives for riding a bike get pretty high.
