Heat-treating the rocks makes them more flake-able so that they can be knapped. Knapping is the process of shaping rocks to form tools. This has been done for thousands of years as early humans learned to make tools.
There are two main reasons why you would heat treat rocks. The first reason would be to improve their flaking qualities in order to shape them for use as tools (think arrowheads or prehistoric knives and such).
