Most of supersonic jets travel at a much faster rate than sound waves in air. So you hear the sound of a jet long after it has passed over your head
The jet travels faster than the sound it makes. It also takes time for the sound to reach you on the ground. By the time the sound reaches you, the jet could have already accelerated out of your sight range.
