Phantom pains are felt because of the spinal cord and the brain.  It comes from the former sensations nerves used to create on your body.  It was thought to originally be a psychological problem but later research found it is just what your body is used to feeling.  It is a problem created by your sensory nerves that still transmit the pain of what happened to you leg through your nervous system
