I think packaging in grocery stores is used for a few reasons, both of which is not essentially necessary and to me at least, don’t outweigh the ultimate cost of the waste. The first reason is that packaging is for convenience, whether it be in ‘fun packs’ (smaller packs of raisins, for example, that are packaged to take on the go but ultimately use more packaging). Another reason is packaging for marketing reasons by making packaging stand out more or look more attractive. A third reason would be packaging of multiple objects to make shipping more efficient and easier.
