People use them because they’re a convenient way to deal with large numbers of biting (or otherwise annoying) insects. People who use them are more concerned with dealing with a “bug problem” then they are in doing so efficiently. On the upside, they’re not using potentially dangerous chemicals to ward off the insects, or releasing repellent fumes into the air. Perhaps bug zappers are actually better for the environment in this respect. At any rate, the reason “why” people use them is simply because most people loathe mosquitoes, and would do just about anything to be rid of them — regardless of the energy efficiency of their methods.
