The main reason scientists think that Mars may have once contained shallow seas of water. Data from Mars probes has confirmed that the polar caps of Mars are made of water ice covered in a thin layer of carbon dioxide and both water and carbon dioxide are present in Mars’ atmosphere. Some Martian valleys exhibit characteristics similar with river drainage patterns, though there is not enough data to know whether a water cycle was sustained on Mars, but microbes and bacteria may have existed on Mars.
