why do we tag California Condors?

Tagging is part of an effort to monitor the population. Tagging allows us to collect a variety of data on tagged individuals — their movements, habitat preferences, perhaps even lifespan. This information-gathering is part of efforts to monitor condor populations because the species was, very recently, on the utter brink of extinction. We need to keep a close eye on them because they’re likely especially vulnerable to a relapse should something go wrong. Monitoring is an essential part of the recovery of any endangered species, as it allows us to know how they’re doing.
