To better understand our own. Comparing one thing to another can explain why things happen in a particular way rather than just analyzing a single piece. Humans generally are a curious race, thus knowing things gives us a sense of achievement. Examining other planets that have no life can help us better understand how we came to be.

Humans are explorers at heart, and we seek to understand the world around us, as it better enables us to survive. This runs particularly deep in the American physche as the United States became a country populated by people willing to leave the known world and venture into the unknown.  The concept of the frontier stands prominent in many people’s minds– the place that is still mysterious, unknown, unexplored, what might it hold for us, what might it teach us. Space is certainly a grand mystery in many ways and so draws the interest of the curious, exploring mind.
