The phases of the moon depend upon the angle the moon is facing the earth and sun. When the moon is considered full, the earth, moon, and sun are nearly aligned, and the full moon will always rise at dusk and set at dawn. When the moon is at its first and third quarters, it is at a 90 degree angle to both the sun and earth. This offset angle is what allows it to be visible throughout the day.
