Well kind of, the large boxes are part of the protection but by themselves would do little. The real benefit lies in all the other wonderful packaging materials that they use to minimize shift and try and dampen any blows it might take. Though boxes on fragile items need to be at least slightly larger because if the box were to take a hit it would almost certainly damage the product inside.
