why do we need to conserve minerals?

Minerals, like fossil fuels often take a very long time and very specific conditions to form. They are essentially as non-renewable as fossil fuels. Replicating these processes in a lab is often very expensive and time consuming. While it is possible to produce some minerals synthetically it is not feasable since the cost of making them is so much more than their actual worth.
