Why do we need to categorize science in different fields?

Science is a very broad term and has many specialties.  We need to categorize it because geology is much different than biology.  Geology focus on rocks while biology focuses on living things.  One realm of science that is needed in both fields is physics.  And even physics has a whole field of engineering that is not contained in those two seperate fields.  Even medicine is categorized into different fields from pediatrics, to geriatrics, to cancer research.  And medicine does not have much in common with environmental science (although more and more links are being drawn within global warming and disease).  Much of science is connected and while many different scientists have to work together, it is too broad for their to be one all knowing scientist who specializes in every realm of science.
