Why do we measure oil in barrels instead of gallons?

Oil was first produced in Pennsylvania in the 1860’s. At the time it was produced, steel oil drums were a thing of the future. Thus, the next best storage facility seemed to be wooden barrels. Originally, there was no standard-sized oil barrel, but eventually the “whiskey-barrel” became the favorite; hence the terminology we use today.
