Why do we lose our baby teeth?

Because we have 32 permanent teeth on their way, and we need to make room! The reason for the existence of the baby teeth in general, rather than us starting out with our permanent teeth, is that the larger permanent teeth we get later on in life would simply be too big to fit in our mouths. Take a look at the permanent teeth you have now, and imagine a baby growing all of them in their tiny mouths.
