Urban sprawl is partially to blame. This phenomenon occurs when a city continues to push into its suburbs. When cities sprawl horizontally, they use up all of their space quickly, and must go upward to grow. Whether there are skyscrapers or not, urban sprawl means more pollution and other negative effects for dwellers, such as negative health effects.
