A lot has to do with setting the heater and AC at very high/low temperatures (wearing a sweater during winter is a much cheaper and more eco friendly option than cranking the heater.) People also tend to forget to urn off the lights when they leave a room, leave the water running during things like brushing their teeth, don’t turn off and unplug appliances like computers when they’re not using them.
It’s all about small habits, but they add up.
If your electric bill is abnormally high, it could be that there is a leak in your water or electricity source. It also helps to unplug each appliance when you are away from your home–even while off, appliances can still use up energy while being plugged in.
