We have speed limits to ensure that drivers make safe choices while driving. A speed limit in some situations is calculated based on physical principles to make sure that cars are not pushed beyond their physical limits. Also, speed limits decrease differences in driving speeds among drivers on the road, making for a safer driving environment. Speed limits do a have a purpose, even when we don’t think that they do.
Speed limits also decrease fuel consumption. Driving at higher speeds increases the RPMs, thereby decreasing fuel economy. In 1974, the speed limit was reduced to 55mph in an attempt to save fuel.
