Good question. Unfortunately, there’s no one easy answer. The shortest is simply that we devote a huge amount of money (about 19 percent of the U.S. federal budget, or about 633.8 billion dollars total) and time to the Department of Defense, but that doesn’t answer the biggest question, which is why we invest so much in war. Reasons people might support include the belief that we need those warheads for own protection, since the threat of them may keep attackers at bay, or that, as a world leader, we have an obligation to maintain and use technology properly so as to end other world conflicts and stop genocide. The controversy over nuclear arms is a complicated one, but to get a start on it, check out the links in the citations.
