Why do we have leap years?

To make sure our calender is aligned with the earth’s revolution around the sun, there needs to be an extra day every four years. It takes the earth slightly more than 365 days to revolve around the sun–365.2422 days to be exact. We have a leap day every 4 years to realign the calender with the earth’s orbit.
