Joseph Priestley and Carl Scheele discovered oxygen in 1774 and named it by combining the Greek words “oxy”, meaning “acid”, and “genes”, meaning “forming” — put together, “acid former”. They “created” oxygen by heating mercuric oxide and various nitrates, and from that must have come up with the concept of forming acid, I guess.
