Why do they say you shouldn’t touch baby animals- like baby birds who fall out of their nests? Isn’t it wrong not to help them since the mothers sometimes cannot?

Good old Snopes checked this one out! We are sometimes told that if we touch a baby animal (like to put a bird back in the nest) then the parents will detect our smell on it and reject it.
    This is NOT TRUE.
BUT, I think the myth is in place to discourage well-intentioned people from trying to give care for an animal that they are simply not capable of giving, OR who are more likely to do harm the animal in handling it rather than helping it.
